The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit root yuj which means to join or to yoke. Yoga is an ancient art based on the subtle science of body, mind and soul. The primary aim of yoga is to restore the mind to calm and peace. The body and the mind are in a state of constant interaction. Yogic science does not distinguish where the body ends and the mind begins but approaches both as a single integrated entity.

Yoga poses cater to the needs of each practitioner according to their specific constitution and physical condition. The poses incorporate vertical, horizontal and other movements that provide energy by directing the blood supply to the areas of the body that need it most. Yoga has the unique ability to soothe the nerves. The nerves function as the medium between the psychological and the physiological bodies. This ability helps to still the mind and relax the entire body.

The advantage of yoga is that it can be practised by many irrespective of age. With advancing age, physically demanding exercises can become less accessible. Yoga increases energy and mental clarity and improves the immune system - all important qualities as we get older. The ancient sages aptly called yoga a therapeutic and preventative science.

"Yoga is a light which once lit will never dim.

The better your practice, the brighter the flame." BKS Iyengar
