What is the significance of saying Namaste?

Namaste (pronounced nah-mah-stay) is a Sanskrit word and means "The spirit in me honours the spirit in you". It is usually spoken with a slight bow of the head and hands pressed together, palms touching, fingers pointing upwards and thumbs resting lightly at the sternum. This gesture is called Añjali Mudra which translates into "salutation seal" and is synonymous with its meaning. It is used for both greetings and farewells. When Añjali Mudra is used during a yoga practice, it provides focus and calm helping to centre the practitioner. Physically, the gesture encourages flexibility in the fingers, wrists, hands and arms.

Namaste represents the notion that all are one and Añjali Mudra honours both the self and the other.

"Namaste. I honour the place in you where the entire universe resides… a place of light, love, truth, peace and wisdom. I honour the place in you where when you are in that place and I am in that place, there is only one of us." Mahatma Gandhi
