Garudasana
"Garuda" means Eagle and represents the "King of Birds". The eagle conveys power and clarity of vision. Eagle pose requires considerable concentration and balance as the weight is exclusively on one leg. The arms and legs are intricately entwined, the foot is stable. The waist extends upward as the legs bend. When one holds still in the pose, one-pointed concentration is realized as in the clarity of the eagle's vision.
Many cultures have adopted the symbol of the eagle and forged it into their mythology. The Indigenous North Americans wear the expansive and elaborate eagle feather headdress which represents the universal spirit. Ancient Squamish legend maintains that the eagle was influential in supplying the Squamish waters with salmon. In ancient Hindu mythology, Garuda is the vehicle of Vishnu described as half-man and half-bird; fighter of injustice and destroyer of evil.
