The breath – so simple! Yet many of us mainly use the top ⅓ of our lungs when we breathe. Physically, when we inhale the abdomen and chest expand and when we exhale they contract. We can increase lung capacity by learning how to draw the breath into the mid and lower regions of the lungs.
The stressful pace of life together with sedentary jobs contribute to unhealthy breathing patterns by creating tension in the body and restricting the expansion of the lungs. Poor respiratory habits can adversely affect our physical, mental and emotional well-being. Shallow breathing can also lead to chronic stress-related illness.
The awareness of the breath can be practiced anywhere and anytime - to relax after a stressful day or to centre yourself in a difficult situation, such as during a doctor’s appointment. Try this simple breath exercise and notice the effects it has on your mind and body.
Breath Exercise: In a seated position, with your spine aligned, place one hand lightly on the abdomen below the ribs but above the navel and the other hand on the thigh. Soften your face, jaw and throat. Soften your gaze or close your eyes. Inhaling slowly through the nose, feel the hand move out as the abdomen expands. As you exhale gently, feel your hand move toward your spine. This is deep abdominal breathing. Repeat for 10 breaths or for as many times as you can without force. Your capacity will increase with practice.
Importance of Better Breathing:
Boosts energy levels
Relieves mental stress and physical tension
Strengthens the immune system
Manages pain and releases chemicals that promote healing
Improves circulation and lowers blood pressure
Reduces fatigue and the need for sleep
Increases powers of concentration and mental clarity
