Why should we Relax?

Whenever we feel physically or emotionally threatened our autonomic nervous system shifts into the fight or flight response. When this occurs, it affects the nervous system's ability to maintain restorative functions which include regulating the endocrine, respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems. If the nervous system is consistently aroused, the body does not have an opportunity to rest or heal.

Relaxation poses and breathing exercises help the nervous system to shift back to its restorative mode. This is particularly important because the nervous system quickly turns on the fight or flight switch but is slow to go back to restorative mode. This relaxed state soothes our nervous system and physiological functioning which frees up energy. The tension is released from the muscles giving us access to the previously locked up energy. This explains why we feel refreshed after a relaxation pose. We can use this freed up energy to move beyond our normal awareness - to free us from our defences, stimulate the creative aspect of our being and access the deeper levels of our energy. "Deep relaxation occurs when the body is completely motionless and the mind is quiet. In this state, the creative qualities of the mind awaken and our awareness can move beyond the normal state of consciousness."

Savasana - the classic relaxation pose that restores, revitalizes and prepares us for meditation. The mind and the body become one and you experience inner silence. Avoid this pose unless you are practising under the supervision of an experienced teacher.
