Muscle strength refers to our ability to move and lift objects. Muscle power pertains to the speed and efficiency with which we move and is linked to the physical functioning of daily life.
We begin to lose muscle mass after age 30 at a rate of approximately 3 - 8% per decade. Even though this may be the case it doesn't mean that it's gone forever. To build and sustain muscle, it takes attention and perseverance. Exercises which develop muscle strength and power include resistance training with weights, bands and our own body weight as well as running, cycling and walking up hills.
Advantages of Muscle Strength and Power:
Ability to perform daily activities that require power without feeling fatigued
Greater stability, coordination and balance decreasing risk of falls and injuries
Helps to maintain a healthy body weight by burning calories
Elevates supply of oxygen to the brain enhancing brain function
Strong muscles, tendons and ligaments improve posture and back alignment
Improved blood supply to the bones results in stronger, denser bones
Increases mobility and joint flexibility
Cardiovascular health benefits
Promotes healthy sleep
Lifts mood, energy levels and builds confidence
Strengthens mental health and develops mental resilience
Cautions: If you have a known medical condition or injury, it is recommended that you discuss these matters with your medical professional and trainer prior to participating in a strength training program. If you are new to exercise, it is advisable to practise under the supervision of an experienced trainer. When starting any exercise program, begin slowly, develop proper breathing technique, listen to your body and stop if you feel any pain or need a break.
