What can we do to Support the Health of our Kidneys?
The kidneys are located in the middle region of the body and help to fillter waste materials from the blood and purify the bloodstream. They play a significant role in the regulation of energy, prana or life force. By strengthening the function of the kidneys, we encourage greater vitality in the body.
The kidney region is vulnerable to compression and sluggishness. Primary factors include a low quality diet and sitting for prolonged periods of time which can cause tightness in the lower back muscles. When the surrounding connective tissue of the kidneys is restricted, it may reduce our capacity to fully inhale. Poor respiratory habits can adversely affect our physical, mental and emotional well-being and the related anxiety and stress can contribute to kidney imbalance.
A Regular Yoga Practice can provide support for the kidney region and help to stimulate the activity of the kidneys. Forward bending poses lengthen and stretch the muscles in the entire back and in particular the lumbar region. Twisting movements support the stability of the kidneys and stimulate the circulation of blood into the kidneys and their surrounding tissues. Backbend poses help to draw the kidneys deep into the body encouraging the flow of kidney energy.
Breath Awareness helps to create suppleness and mobility of the diaphragm. This enables the kidneys to be more responsive in supporting the expansion of the chest and lungs and the circulation of vital energy.
