How does our balance system function?
The body's balance system is a complex operation between the brain, inner ear, eyes, muscles and joints. The inner ear houses the vestibular system (balance organs) which sends information to the cerebellum, the brain's movement control centre. The inner ear, eyes, muscles and joints send messages about the body's position to the cerebellum. Deep-pressure sensors in the skin, muscles and joints provide information on the positions and rates of motion of the various parts of the body with respect to one another, and the position of the body in relation to the environment (proprioception). Utilizing this feedback, the brain sends messages to the muscles to make any postural adjustments needed to coordinate balance.
Balance depends on input from the brain and the visual, vestibular and proprioceptive systems. Problems with any of these systems can affect balance. These can include inner ear, vision, muscle and joint problems, anxiety and stress, illness, injury, neurological disorders and medications. Yet, balance can be learned, improved, even challenged regardless of ability. When starting any balance exercise, remember to take your time, breathe calmly and stay in the moment.
Advantages of Good Balance:
Increases postural stability
Builds muscular strength
Strengthens inner ear and eyes
Improves coordination
Helps to prevent falls
Quicker recovery from injury
Enhances proprioception
